Backpacking gear list.

For the program's backcountry trips — Eagle Rock, Big Bend, and the Guadalupe Peak capstone. Everything goes on your back, so weight and layering matter.

Pack for a range of conditions. Mountain temperatures can run 7–10°F cooler than the valley and swing from 80°F to below freezing with snow. Aim for a total pack weight (with food and water) around 40 lbs for dads and 19 lbs for daughters. Borrow what you don't own — no need to buy gear.

Food & water

  • Water — ~1.3 gallons per person (a 6-liter storage bag + the SmartWater bottles)

Water is the heavy one — roughly 17 lbs for dads and 4 lbs for daughters. Plan your carry accordingly.
